Information
for 1st time Buyers City of Port Moody
The City continues to support industrial development as part of its economic development strategy, as long as a high standard of environmental protection is maintained. A number of both single and multi-family residential developments are underway in Port Moody. Much of the recent development has been on the City's north shore within the area commonly known as "Heritage Mountain". Developments are subject to neighbourhood plans which include architectural design guidelines and an emphasis on green space. While much of Port Moody's future residential development will be focused on the north shore, redevelopment opportunities also exist in the historic south shore area. The City is particularly supportive of both residential and commercial developments in this area which recognize the community's historical architectural themes. Major developments are either underway or planned for Port Moody's Town Centre, which is located at the head of the inlet, linking the north and south shore neighbourhoods. Located adjacent to Port Moody's foreshore park system, the Town Centre combines a mix of higher density, quality developments. Construction recently began on Port Moody's new City Hall/Community Theatre/Library complex, adjacent to the City's existing Social-Recreation Centre. Bosa Development Corporation will soon begin the first phase of its mixed use development, containing 900 high-rise and low-rise residential units on 130,000 sq.ft. of retail and office commercial space. Another approved development in Town Centre is on the "Inucan" site, which is planned for up to 1,300 high-rise and low-rise residential units, along with retail and commercial space and a church. Smaller residential developments are planned on several other sites in Town Centre, which is also home to Eagle Ridge Hospital. The City's main objective in Town Centre is to create a strong "people place", with an emphasis on ground plane amenities and activities, and a pedestrian oriented environment. A major widening of the Barnet Highway is underway, with an additional lane in each direction intended to handle buses and car- pool vehicles during rush hour. Rapid transit is also expected to come to Port Moody in the future in the form of a Skytrain extension and/or commuter rail to downtown Vancouver using the existing CPR line. Port Moody takes great pride in its park system. Foreshore Park contains walking and bicycle paths and links Old Orchard Park on the north shore with Rocky Point Park on the south shore. In addition to numerous local parks throughout the City, Port Moody also has Belcarra Regional Park, including Sassamat Lake, within its boundaries. Port Moody has strong citizen participation in a range of events and activities, such as the annual "Golden Spike Days" in June/July of each year, local environmental initiatives such as fish hatcheries, and community associations, which cover all neighbourhoods within the City. The City's heritage values are maintained through the airport Moody Museum, the identification and preservation of historical buildings, and revitalization initiatives in Old Town Centre.
